Statement of support for the People’s History Museum

Manchester Disabled People Against Cuts

Statement of support for the People’s History Museum.

July 2023.

Manchester Disabled People Against Cuts (MDPAC) would like to share solidarity with the People’s History Museum (PHM), especially LGBTQI+ workers who have been targeted recently.

MDPAC thinks the PHM’s equality policies and approach to inclusion are sound – and visible within the museum’s collections and exhibitions, which often have intersectional aspects.

For example, we love the non-binary mannequin in the Nothing About Us Without Us (NAUWU) exhibition, wearing historic t-shirts from the Disabled People’s Direct Action Network (DAN) protests.

The NAUWU exhibition also includes Disabled People Against Cuts artefacts.

Political liberation movements are intersectional and the PHM celebrates that history, proudly, as do we.

Background

PHM have been targeted by a group that claims to be ‘for’ women’s rights, but appears to only work to undermine the equal rights of transgender people. You can find out more about them here, thanks to Trans Safety Network.

MDPAC aim to have similar equality policies to PHM, and our network is inclusive, too.

Activists from Manchester Disabled People Against Cuts are involved in the steering group for the Nothing About Us Without Us exhibition, on display at the People’s History Museum until the end of October.
